In a significant step towards making India a global AI powerhouse, NVIDIA and Reliance Industries announced a partnership to build cutting-edge AI infrastructure in India. Speaking at the NVIDIA AI Summit on October 24, 2024, Jensen Huang, CEO of NVIDIA, stressed the importance of positioning India as a leader in AI innovation and manufacturing.

With this collaboration, NVIDIA and Reliance aim to create an AI-driven ecosystem that could transform sectors like healthcare, agriculture, and disaster management while enabling India to export AI models globally.

India: A Global Hub for AI Manufacturing

During his keynote address, Huang urged India to leap ahead in AI manufacturing, capitalizing on the global demand for digital intelligence. He emphasized the significance of AI in the modern world, positioning it as a vital new industry. "No one manufactures intelligence right now. There's a factory running behind ChatGPT. That's a new manufacturing industry," Huang explained, encouraging India to be at the forefront of this revolution.

The collaboration between NVIDIA and Reliance underscores India’s shift from exporting labor to exporting advanced AI solutions. This partnership focuses on creating robust AI infrastructure to support innovations across various industries, positioning India as a key global player in the AI ecosystem.

Building AI Infrastructure: The Foundation for Innovation

At the heart of this partnership is the construction of a powerful AI infrastructure, capable of supporting AI applications on an unprecedented scale. NVIDIA will provide access to its groundbreaking GH200 Grace Hopper Superchip and DGX Cloud, offering Indian companies, researchers, and startups a platform to develop next-generation AI solutions.

This infrastructure will be housed in AI-ready data centers, which will expand to 2,000 MW over time. Managed by Reliance Jio Infocomm, the telecom arm of Reliance Industries, these data centers will provide energy-efficient computing solutions to support India’s AI-driven future.

Reliance’s vast expertise in 5G, fiber networks, and digital infrastructure positions the company as an ideal partner to execute this ambitious project. The collaboration aligns with Reliance’s broader digital strategy of building a comprehensive cloud and AI platform to serve both consumers and businesses.

Localized AI: A Hindi Large Language Model for India

A crucial element of the partnership is the creation of a Hindi Large Language Model (LLM), which NVIDIA will develop in collaboration with Indian companies. This model, which will be open-sourced, is designed to cater to India’s diverse linguistic landscape, enabling more inclusive AI solutions tailored to the country’s unique needs.

“Hindi is the hardest language model region in the world. If anybody can do it, we can do it,” Huang noted, expressing confidence in NVIDIA’s ability to tackle the complexities of India’s linguistic diversity. The development of a Hindi LLM is seen as a significant step towards creating AI applications that serve India’s vast population and can be adapted for other languages globally.

Applications of AI: From Agriculture to Healthcare

The partnership aims to address some of India’s most pressing challenges by leveraging AI solutions across various sectors. For instance, AI-powered applications could assist rural farmers by providing real-time weather updates and market prices in their local language. In healthcare, AI could offer diagnostic assistance for medical imaging, addressing the shortage of doctors in remote areas.

AI also holds promise in disaster management, particularly in predicting cyclonic storms and enabling timely evacuations. By analyzing decades of atmospheric data, AI models could provide more accurate predictions, potentially saving lives in vulnerable regions.

The Future of AI: Physical AI and Cost-Effective Solutions

Huang also highlighted the need for Physical AI, which refers to AI models capable of interacting with the physical world. This next-generation AI technology could revolutionize industries such as autonomous driving and automated factories.

As AI adoption grows, Huang assured that the cost of AI technologies would decrease over time. He discussed NVIDIA’s efforts to develop cost-effective solutions by using distillation techniques, which involve training smaller AI models to perform specific tasks more efficiently.

AI Supercomputers: A Game-Changer for India

The NVIDIA-Reliance partnership will introduce supercomputing capabilities that are more powerful than any existing infrastructure in India. This will provide Indian startups, developers, and researchers with access to state-of-the-art computing resources, enabling them to push the boundaries of AI innovation.

For Reliance Jio’s 450 million customers, this AI infrastructure will open the door to new AI-powered services and applications, further solidifying Jio’s position as a leader in India’s digital transformation.

A Vision for the Future: Empowering India’s AI Journey

Mukesh Ambani, Chairman of Reliance Industries, expressed his optimism about the partnership, stating that it would catalyze India’s technological renaissance. “As India advances from a country of data proliferation to creating technology infrastructure for widespread and accelerated growth, computing and technology super centers like the one we envisage with NVIDIA will provide the catalytic growth just like Jio did to our nation’s digital march,” said Ambani.

Akash Ambani, Chairman of Reliance Jio Infocomm, echoed this sentiment, emphasizing Reliance’s commitment to democratizing access to cutting-edge technologies. The partnership with NVIDIA marks a significant step towards making India a global leader in AI and digital innovation.

By building a robust AI infrastructure, developing localized AI solutions, and fostering innovation across industries, NVIDIA and Reliance aim to unlock India’s vast potential in the AI space, positioning the country as a major exporter of AI technologies in the years to come.
